FAQs

Which is the difference between 70% Isopropylc Alcohol and 10% Povidone-Iodine?
Both are antiseptics but they have different mechanisms of action. On one hand, 70% isopropyl alcohol denatures proteins and they have effect on gram-positive bacteria and gram negative. It also has bactericidal power in some viruses such as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and CMV (cytomegalovirus). However, povidone-iodine is an iodine complex and it is an oxidizer substance that produces precipitation of proteins and DNA. It has effect on bacteria, fungi, viruses, MRSA and bactericidal power mycobacteria but it has low effect in spores.
What is IPA?
It is Isopropyl Alcohol.
Is the alcohol used on the Swabstick safe?
Yes, the alcohol used for our swabsticks is 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which you are able to spot in everyday life as hand sanitizer, or disinfectant spray for cleaning surfaces of desks. If not ingested, or spilled in huge amount on the surface of the skin (which is not probable because there is not enough alcohol in the alcohol swabsticks to spill on yourself or drink), your body is able to break down small amount of IPA via the kidney and enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH).
I do not drink alcohol. Will this get absorbed into my skin and enter my bloodstream?
If you use it properly, “No.” Alcohol swabstick are applied dermatologically, meaning on the surface of the skin. A small amount of alcohol may be absorbed from the skin. However, it is insignificant amount for systemic absorption, and thus will not affect alcohol concentration in the blood. But, that means if you, by any chance, ingest/eat the alcohol swabstick or spill a huge amount of 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA), you may get toxic response to the IPA. Some toxic responses involve low blood pressure, dizziness, nausea, and abdominal pain. If these symptoms are seen, do not induce vomiting since that would damage the esophagus. See your doctor right away if such symptoms are seen.
